Gayest Straight Vampire at the Vampire Ball

Man, it's been AGES since I've CGed my own stuff. My New President's Day Resolution is to spend a lot more time drawing, so here's Thomas and Bianca of Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files. Because only something like five people on my flist have read the books (which TOTALLY needs to change), context is behind the cut.

Critique is welcome, and encouraged!

Context: The setting is a masquerade ball at Bianca's manor, celebrating Bianca's elevation in the Red Court, one of the three vampire courts in the series. As per tradition, a representative of the two other courts were invited. The White Court, enemy of the Reds, sent Thomas, bastard son of the White leader, as an insult. The contents of the envelope represent a threat on Thomas' life.

Or, in a totally different reading of the scene, my roommate and I have decided that Bianca is presenting Thomas with the award for Gayest Costume at the Vampire Ball. She's just jealous because he's more glittery than she is. Ah, Thomas! Believe it or not, he's straight. :D

Thomas looks like Orlando Bloom!

I am among the uninitiated into this Dresden Files cult, but I can still say: the art is beautiful! I love the curves and firey quality to Bianca's dress, and glittery butterfly wings? Hilarious (the glitter, by the way, looks eerily real). Also, I like the loose background style - it works nicely with your precise foreground. You are the queen of things like marble-y steps. Guh!

A few things I noticed: Thomas' lower left leg seems to be straight from the knee down, which, given the weight on his right leg, makes his knee do something rather painful looking. The difference is style between his body and wings also makes them look as if they are floating a short distance behind him (which may be intentional. Ooh, I just realized they're slightly transparent!). I thought Bianca's lower proportions were a little odd, but now I can't tell: I think it might just be a trick of the very high-cut dress. It also seems like she should be shedding more light on the objects around her, but she herself isn't lit as drastically as the bright colours suggest she would be, so I guess she's not eminating as much light as the palatte seems to hint at.

Lovely work, as always.

Re: Thomas looks like Orlando Bloom!

*snorks* Actually, I used Orlando Bloom for hair references. Gotta love prettyboys.

I actually thought I'd get a lot of flak for the marble steps, as they're essentially just the Render Clouds filter and a bunch of adjustment layers. The glitter was equally simple! So much Photoshop love.

Thanks for the crit! I'll have to consider doing Thomas something with Thomas' leg and adjusting Bianca's dress slightly so that it's less confusing.

Yup. Crazy gold nail polish! And I am *such* a glitter fiend now I've seen how easy it is to do in Photoshop... Down, Priscilla, down!

Very well done! The colors are great and I love how you designed the fire dress. My only problem with it is just one of how I envision the characters, namely that "my" Thomas quite a bit slimmer (muscular, still, but in a more wiry way), with darker hair and a paler skin tone. That's my only complaint, though. I'm really just surprised and delighted that someone made Dresden Files fanart. =)

Hee! A lot of people have called me on Thomas' skin tone, and they're absolutely right. I always pictured Thomas as being rather tan (as Whites don't have the sunlight issues Reds do), then having the color leech out of his skin and eyes when he was in vamp-mode, but of course, when I reread the scene to make sure I had all the details right, Jim thwarted my mental images with his silly canon. *grins*

The hair color is just a reflection of my inability to CG black hair. I tried to make it look black, but I guess I'll have to work on that.

The large build I blame on my Digital Figure Modelling class. :D He actually turned out a bit bulkier than I'd intended. I might have to see if I can trim him down a bit when I fix the other mistakes.

The glitter niftyness is adapted from this tutorial. I have become such a glitter junkie since discovering it! *glitterglitterglitter*

READ THEM! You'll love them. I'd actually be hard-pressed to think of one of my online friends I don't think would like them. But you? Love.

Thanks so much! I always found it such a treat to see how my friends have grown and matured as people and as artists over time. Kell, Alicey, Moni, Rebecca, you, etc etc etc. Thinking back to my pathetic first CGs, and the work you guys were doing when I met you, it's a bit mindblowing!

Thanks! Even though the fandom is tiny, it always seemed bizarre that there is almost no Dresden fan art to speak of. They're so visual! I can't go ten pages without thinking OH MY GOD I MUST DRAW THAT.

Nice icon, btw!

Your coloring is as always so very fantastic. I love the glow of Bianca and the marble effect on the stairs and Thomas' skin tone (did I ever mention how much I LOVE the way you color skin tone? It is so delicious). I totally love his wings, and keep being drawn to them, and staring at them in fascination. They look so tangible! It's all sorts of coolness.

The two things I would crit are:
1) The fixable suggestions - Bianca, I'm assuming, is a really tiny person/creature? I would suggest just sizing down her head and shoulders a wee bit, because when I look at her top half, I keep expecting her bottom half to be a bit longer.

2) The for-next-time suggestion - compositionally, as much as I love Thomas' wings, they are very distracting because they are so difinitively lined and vivid and differently textured from the rest of the pic. Whem my uye travels on the page, it stops at the wings and then I forget to see what else he's doing (it took my third-time looking to realize he's gripping his sword!) Maybe it's just me, though, focussing on the piece of the art that I personally enjoy the most. *hee*

I do love all the detailing you include in the entire pic, though. Her beaded accessory (you can feel its weight!) and the warbly light-to-dark lines you use for the bg people and bushes....so cool. I am so in love with your amazing CG skills, and their lovely feet in the sandals! Very classy. <3!

Ooh, thanks for all the great crit! I've found quite a few other things I'd like to modify, so I'll definitely be taking your suggestions into account.

I blurred the black lines of the wings slightly, and already they're not as blatantly distracting, and they seem like they're actually attached to Thomas, as opposed to floating a foot behind him. I'll have to play with them some more and figure out how to make them a tad more subtle, but still delightfully ostentatious, as they were one of my main reasons for choosing this scene to illustrate!

As for Bianca's stature, she's supposed to be pretty short, but I may have overdone it. Others have commented that her upper body doesn't quite seem to fit with her lower body, so I'll have to tackle that for version 2.0.

Re: The background detailing, you were actually one of my main inspirations. You always have stuff going on in the background. I was thinking about our Ron/Luna pic, and those two people watching from behind the window, and I knew I had to populate the space!

Flames

It's a nice picture but my memory insists that the flames should be much smaller and body-hugging; also weren't they graduated in colour from blue to red?

Must go and read the book again…thanks for the excuse :-)

Re: Flames

I claim artisic license on both points! The flames are supposed to be in the shape of an evening gown, but I just liked it this way so much more! Jim provides such vivid descriptions of characters' clothing and physical attributes, but I find myself guilty of using those descriptions as a springboard for my own ideas. And yes, you're also right about the gradiation in color. I experimented with it, and the single-color flames just looked better.

I guess I follow the old fanartists' code: "If you don't like my version, draw your own!" God knows the Dresden Files fandom could use more fanart! *grins*

Oh. My. God. I love this picture! It looks so amazing! I've read the books, so I know exactly what part this is from, and this is freakin' fantastic. Bravo!
