My Deathly Hallows Predictions And How They Panned Out

Hey, kids! It's time for Professor Trelawney's Prediction Time!

Going into book 5, I had a bizarre conviction that Sirius would die.

Going into book 6, my fondness for Joseph Campbell gave me the certainty that Dumbledore would snuff it.

Behind the cut are my predictions for the seventh book, and what really happened! Spoilers abound, obviously.

Before we begin, I just wanted to say how much I absolutely ADORED this book! Some of my commentary below gets pretty biting and sarcastic, and I wanted to firmly state that despite my derision and mockery, this book far exceeded my expectations and proved to be powerfully moving and absolutely thrilling. Except the epilogue, which read like bad fanfic. Anyway, thank you, JK Rowling, for this extraordinary end to a phenomenal series! I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors, and I hope Harry's extraordinary success doesn't stymie whatever comes next.

HORCRUCES HORCRUXES:
  • Harry's scar is a horcrux, and this realization makes him believe he must die in order to defeat Voldemort. Quite possibly, the horcruxecomy removes Harry's magic.
The first and second points are true, except Harry himself was a horcrux, rather than just his scar. The third point is false. Also, I cried when Harry died. I could barely even read the words, my vision was so blurred.

  • The Dementor's Kiss will prove instrumental in removing Voldy's soul fragment from Harry's scar or one of the other horcruxes.
False. JKR's solution for Harry was pretty cool (resurrection naysayers obviously are unaware that you can't throw a rock at a collection of classic literary work without hitting a hero that gets murdered and resurrected. Bravo, JKR, for having the ova to assert Harry's place among them), but I think a Dementor's Kiss would have been a WAY better horcrux-removal device than Fiendfyre. Come on, give us something established in canon! That was so unexpectedly hamfisted.

  • RAB is Sirius' brother Regulus Black, and the locket horcrux is the one our heroes encountered while cleaning Grimmauld Place. It was stolen by Mundungus Fletcher, and it has already been sold.
True, but it was pretty much a given!

  • The Hufflepuff Cup is in the Hogwarts Trophy Room Transfigured into the Medal for Magical Merit (from here--absolutely phenomenal and utterly convincing)False. Absolutely, utterly false. WHAT THE BANANAS, JK? This is way better than Gringotts!

  • Nagini is NOT a horcrux, as Voldy puts her in too many risky situations for her to be one.
    False.

THE INEVITABLE MASSIVE BATTLE:
  • There will be an Inevitable Massive Battle at Hogwarts.
    True. It was inevitable!

  • Neville will be awesome.
    HECK YES IT'S TRUE!

  • Many Slytherin students will join the battle on the side of Good, because not all Slytherins are freaking evil.
... Freaking false. Wow, how stereotypical of you, JK. You know, cunningness =/= willingness to serve Lord Voldemort.

REDEMPTION AND THE DEATH TOLL:
  • The trio (and Ginny) will survive and be OBHWF (One Big Happy Weasley Family) even though Harry/Ginny is tiresome and Harry/Luna is made of awesome.
    True.

  • Snape is first and foremost Dumbledore's man.
Snape murdered Dumbledore at D's order.
Snape had saved Dumbledore from dying from the effects of the ring horcrux to begin with.
The truth will come to light in some way that leaves no room for argument.
    Snape will die.

    Five resounding trues!

  • Percy will see the light and be forgiven
True! Told ya he wasn't evil! He will not die, as the redemption + death card has been dealt to Snape.

  • One of the twins will either be irrevocably maimed or die.Too true! We got both. When I read about George's maiming, I was so relieved, because in my mind that meant that they were both safe. How wrong I was! *wails*

  • One Weasley will die, most likely either one of the twins or Charlie. Definitely not Molly, Bill, Ginny, or both twins.
True. *sobs* And PERCY, oh god, I thought he was going to be killed defending Fred's body! I was screaming inside while I read that scene.

  • Hagrid will die, as the amount of sobbing JKR reportedly did as she wrote the final chapters of the book means that one of her favourite characters--Hermione or Hagrid--will snuff it, and no way she's killing Hermione, plus the etymological theory I list below.
False, thus squelching my favourite etymological theory. In alchemical lore, the creation of the Philosopher's Stone occurs through a multi-step process, in which its color changes from black, to white, to red, to gold. Note that the first two colors correspond with characters killed in the fifth and sixth book: Sirius Black and Albus Dumbledore (white, Latin). I thought it would be fitting if Hagrid died next, as his first name, Rubeus, means "red" or "ruddy." Then maybe Harry could become an auror (based on the Latin aurum).

  • Lupin will live and be emo, the last surviving Marauder.
False. Maybe this is the death JKR was bawling about, though if so she certainly didn't give it the angsty pagespace it deserved.

  • We will somehow see Sirius and Dumbledore again (possibly involving Sirius' mirror or the Veil), but they will not come back to life, even temporarily.
True, except for my guesses at the means.

  • If JKR kills Neville, I will throw the book across the room and refuse to read any further.
Thankfully, this prediction was never tested!

IN THE FUTURE!
  • If Harry does retain his powers, he will become an auror.
Wow, JK, it sure would be nice if we found out what ANY OF THE TRIO'S JOBS WERE. Ah well, at least we'll always have crappy futurefic like the epilogue itself.

  • There will be many OBHWF babies, all named after dead people.
True for Harry and Ginny. Thank you, Ron and Hermione, for not being nauseating! And speaking of next-gen babies, Scorpius? Really? That name might have been tolerable if the constellations of Draco and Scorpio were close to each other, but they're practically on opposite sides of the sky! The etymologist tsks to herself.

  • Neville will teach Herbology at Hogwarts. And even though JKR has said there would be no Neville/Luna in the books, they will marry and have awesome babies, because come to think of it Neville/Luna is way awesomer than Harry/Luna. Harry can have Ginny, for all I care!
True! At least, the first part. But the second half is not contradicted by anything in canon, and in fact is BOLSTERED by reports of Neville and Luna's awesome DA missions together, so it is now officially My Fanon.</b>

And because I'm a dork and like to consolidate LJ entries, here are my responses to the Deathly Hallows MP3 Fortunetelling Meme, ganked from Heidi's journal.

Rules: Go to the music player of your choice and put it on shuffle. Say the following questions aloud and press play. Use the song titles and/or one to two lines from the song as your answers.

I'm not sure if this is legit, but I skipped tracks from audio books or songs that don't have any lyrics.

What do I think of DH?
"Marys of the Sea (Intro Jam)," Tori Amos
I gotta face some kind of evil tomorrow
I need to know that you're gonna be there
and you know my faith is in your hands now
just back me on up

What do I think of the Epilogue?
"Fake Tales of San Francisco," Arctic Monkeys
And there's a few bored faces in the back
All wishing they weren't there

*snorks loudly*

What do I want to say to JKR right now?
"Enchantment Passing Through," Aida
To sail away to half discovered places
To see the secrets so few eyes have seen
To see moments of enchantment on our faces
The moments when we smile and those in between

What would JKR want to say to me right now?
"The Princess of Pure Delight," Lady in the Dark
I'll answer that riddle
Cried the singer of song
(or)
The castle soon rang with cheer and with laughter
And of course, they lived happily ever after

What do I think of OotP: The Movie?
"Ladder," Stuart Davis
The fish became a lizard, the shrew became an ape
will the ape become a Mother Teresa? She came from clay
There's more to evolution than a little DNA

Well, the first two and the fifth movies were made of the same DNA, but there couldn't be more difference between the two!

What should I do with my life now that I've finished reading all there is of canon?
"Father's Son," Tori Amos, American Doll Posse
Steady girl on your feet
You and your wonderings
Bread can feed a few
so can some cartoons

What would I say to Harry Potter right now?
"Stacked Crooked," The New Pornographers
You clicked and tossed your crypted crossword locks
You then abandoned talks and now it's off to say
While we would weep in smoke and mirrored states
Stacked crooked all along, but now I'm on my way

What would I say to seven Harry Potters right now?
"Pass It On," The Coral
But I'd accept what's coming round
If I could only lose this sound
That's been ringing in my ears
And tormenting me for years

What would I say to Harry Potter in 2016/2017?
"Sit On My Face And Tell Me That You Love Me," Monty Python's Flying Circus
*dies and is dead*

What would Harry Potter say to me right now?
"Monorail," The Simpsons
Were you sent here by the devil?
No, good sir, I'm on the level.

What advice does [my favorite character] have for me? (Luna)
"Take Me With You," Tori Amos
Oh take me with you
I don't need shoes to follow
(or even better!)
What you doin
I am fed up with this questioning.

What advice does [my least favorite character] have for me? (Umbridge)
"Love Thing," Spice Girls. Uh....
Now don't go wasting my time

How will I remember HP one year from now?
"Growing on Me," The Darkness
I wanna shake you off but you just won't go
And you're all over me but I don't want anyone to know
That you're attached to me, that's how you've grown
Won't you leave me, leave me alone

What do I think of the fandom today?
"Cabaret," Cabaret NBCR
No use permitting some prophet of doom
To wipe every smile away.
Life is a cabaret, old chum,
Come to the cabaret!

What will I think of the fandom one year from now?
"Halloween," Aqua
Remember me?
I've got your number
I'm back to haunt you
Ha ha ha ha ha!

That epilogue was made of fail.

Me: Hah, I just read the BEST fake spoiler!
Friends: Don't tell us.
Me: Sure, but c'mon, there's no way it was real! Such a load of crap. So completely mealy and fanficcy. I bet some goopy kid posted it, passing it off as a spoiler.
Friends: Was it written in JKR's style?
Me: Nah, it was a load of crap.

*friends buy book*
*I flip to last pages*

Epilogue: NINETEEN YEARS LATER.
Me: ... you've got to be kidding me.

I love how the meme worked for you!

And perhaps the red wasn't in a name, but in a character - Fred's hair?

I'm choosing to believe that JKR *was* going to kill Hagrid, but he was the one who got the reprieve. :D

Dementor's Kiss would have been a spectacular, eerie, appropriate way for something to go, although setting it up would have been difficult -- it would have had to have been Harry or Nagini. Do Dementor's drink? I guess it could have been the Hufflepuff cup.

I, too, was sorely disappointed at the no-Slytherins-stayed.

Instead of living and being emo, for a while I was SO PLEASED that he, of everybody, was finally the normal one with a wife and kid who was going to live and maybe possible be happy for once.

Before and through most of this book, I was all for Neville/Luna. But! I loved Dean grabbing Luna's hand as they leave to fight the final battle. Squee! Interracial-interblood-poster-couple, anybody? Also, waaaay more interesting than Harry/Ginny.

Ooh, Luna/Dean could be excellent! Dean is one of my very favorite minor characters (I was so glad to see more of him in this book--I wasn't expecting to at all). One of the things that I've noticed about him is that he tends to stick up for the misunderstood and the underdog, like Lupin and Hagrid, and I think he could come to understand Luna more than most. I wonder what Luna might see in Dean. ::plot bunnies begin to hop::

Also, Luna has an artist's way of looking at the world, seeing what's normally unseen and not shying away from the unconventional, while Dean is known to have artistic skills. Even if they weren't a romantic pairing, they might still work well as a team.

I tried to find the place where Dean and Luna held hands, and was unable to. Do you happen to know the page number or the chapter title?

I'm hoping there will be plenty of shippage of these two for me to enjoy. :D

It's US page 604:
"Come on, Luna," Dean called as he passed, holding out his free hand; she took it and followed him back up the stairs.

Awwww!

I like the term "horcruxectomy." Also, despite what JKR said, I agree that Luna/Neville is a fantastic pairing. (I mean, DH directly contradicted what she said on her site about the Fidelius Charm, so maybe this is just a second example of the site being incorrect.)

...but I think a Dementor's Kiss would have been a WAY better horcrux-removal device than Fiendfyre. Come on, give us something established in canon! That was so unexpectedly hamfisted.

It is a nifty idea, but what exactly happens to a soul when it's sucked out by a Dementor? I know that Lupin said it was gone forever, but I thought that he meant it was gone from that person forever, rather than necessarily destroyed. If that's true, then the soul-piece might exist in the Dementor, and you'd have to destroy it. Which would be pretty damn hard. (Of course, I could be completely mistaken.)
