How the Moon Began

I'm generally quite pleased with the way my negatives came out. For those that don't read my blog, I spent last night flailing about in a cemetary, draconically ordering my friends around in the cold, searching for the best methods to metamorphose them into spirits. Photographically, of course.

This month's assignment is to depict aspects of a fairy tale, and I chose the obscure "How the Moon Began", by the brothers Grimm. Here's what I have so far:

The Brothers:
Arn, old and wise
Boz, the quiet one
Cass, a man of many deeds (Abstraction? Me?)
Deol, cunning and crafty

Taken last night:
Spirits of the dead (I)
I have several other spirit pictures, but they weren't dry enough for safe transport. I'll try to scan them at school before I have to turn them in Monday afternoon.

Comment or risk the wrath of my ancestors.

Geeza Louisa, I loff them all! The spirits one is really cool and I love how you represented the characters with mostly facial (one bodily methinks) parts! Genious, I tell you, genious!

Wow. Do I even need to tell you how incredibly impressed I am with you right now? Yes? Well all right. The Brothers are just plain wow, awesome how you managed to capture the descriptions with such simplistic shots. And the spirits... I'm rather interested in the technique there. How'd you manage? Spill.

However, plebian me isn't familiar with the story. Care to share?

Priscilla's Technique-O-Niftyness:

Start with a very dark location, a tripod, several flashlights, and a few benevolently-tempered friends. Make sure your camera has a "bulb" setting, or a simiar setting that allows you to keep the shutter open as long as you please. I set my aperture at f-3.2, the largest opening that lens had. If you want, you can connect a cable release so you don't have to worry about jostling the camera, but it's really unnecessary. I didn't use one, and I was fine. Mount the camera on a tripod, choosing a location that has few bright lights. By the time your shutter has been open a minute, they will be blinding.

Now arrange your friends at strategic locations and tell them to keep still. Hold the shutter open and splash them with light, using a handy-dandy flashight. This can be as short as 5 seconds or as long as 20 or 30 -- play around and experiment. Then, either tell them to move slightly (blurring them even more -- they'll already be fairy blurred to start out wih), to strike a new pose (making them seem multi-faceted), or merely to move out of the frame. If you splash the area they were in previously with more light, they will appear transparent. I only used flashlights, but you could probably get some awesome effects using strobes.

Shoot oodles of pictures, testing every variable you can conceive. It's quite fun! And finally, make lots of copies for your patient, obedient friends, as they will ambush you if you don't.

Hope that helps!

How cool! I love the characterizations, the way you can concentrate a personality down to 1 little bit of them. The spirits one is really spectacular, too. I miss photography class. :(

The techniques you used are amazing. I like the emphisis on strengths through close-ups. Naturally, the "Spirits of the Dead" photo is absolutely, astoundingly cool. The spirit in the back looks especially neat, with the arms the way they are.
